Kill GC Drift Fast: The $350 Fix

Kill GC Drift Fast: The $350 Fix

Moisture is quietly taxing your GC—often $1.2k–$3.6k per year

If you’ve seen even 1–2 reruns/month, you’re paying for it. Baseline drift, ghost water peaks, sticky valves, and early column wear all trace back to humidity. The fix is simple: a compact sunsep™ SWG-A01 membrane dryer that removes water vapor only (not analytes), installs in minutes, and just works.

Where the cost comes from (conservative, real-world)

Reruns:

  • Analyst time: 0.5–1.0 hr/run × $35–$75/hr
  • Instrument time/opportunity: 0.5–1.0 hr/run × $50–$150/hr
  • Consumables: liners/septa/solvents/standards (~$10–$75/run) Even 1–2 moisture-driven reruns/month totals roughly $1,200–$3,000/yr.

Early column wear: One early column retirement adds ~$300/yr.

Typical moisture pain: $1,200–$3,600/yr (not counting missed TAT or stress).

The “easy-button” solution

Buy this: 48″ sunsep™ SWG-A01 (jack-of-all-trades) — $350 Removes water vapor only, low dead volume, ships with ¼″ compression fittings. Intended for typical GC sample lines (≤ 4 SLPM). 👉 48" Analytical Sample Gas Dryer

Want extra margin & longer service life? Upgrade to: 72″ sunsep™ SWG-A01 — more drying headroom now, more stable performance as membranes age. 👉 72" Analytical Sample Gas Dryer

“Purge” in 20 seconds (what it is, how to set it)

A membrane dryer needs a small sweep flow on the shell side to carry away the water vapor that diffuses through the membrane.

  • Use your instrument air or dry N₂ as the purge source.
  • Start at 15–20% of your sample flow (e.g., 200 mL/min purge for a 1 L/min sample).
  • Vent purge to atmosphere (no back-pressure).
  • Set with a small regulator/needle valve or a fixed restrictor. If you still see water effects, nudge purge up; if everything’s stable, you can try trimming it down.

10-minute install

Sample source → prefilter/coalescer sunsep™ SWG-A01 → GC inlet. Keep the outlet line short, leak-check fittings. All units are ¼″ OD—keep ¼″↔⅛″ and ¼″↔6 mm reducing unions handy.

Why it pays (annualized, conservative)

  • Moisture pain: ~$1,200–$3,600/yr
  • Dryer cost (all-in): hardware amortized + tiny purge + occasional filter ≈ $240–$420/yr Net: typically $800–$3,400 saved per year. Prevent just one rerun/month and you’re roughly break-even.

Bottom line: If moisture is causing even a couple reruns, a sunsep™ dryer is an easy, cash-positive fix. Grab the 48″ now; step up to 72″ if you want more margin and longer life.
